The Open University program at CSU Bakersfield allows anyone not admitted to the university to enroll in CSUB courses. Open University students enroll with a number of different goals, including:

  • Satisfying a prerequisite requirement for graduate school
  • Adding a new skill for a job search or career advancement
  • Completing a particular course not offered or full at their home university
  • Prepping for a professional exam, such as the CPA exam
  • Exploring a personal interest
  • Raising GPA to become eligible to re-enroll as a main campus student

Courses by Profession

We’ve curated groups of courses that might be of interest to those in various professions, those looking to enter a particular field, or those looking to satisfy prerequisites for a particular graduate program. Please note that these lists aren’t exhaustive and may not meet the requirements of your intended program or professional goals. These lists are meant to serve as a starting point. Teacher Credential Prerequisites / Professional Development

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Each MBA program has a slightly different set of prerequisites and we highly encourage you to review your MBA program’s requirements prior to enrolling. Typically, the courses below (and possibly more) will be required.

  • BA 3010 – Data Analysis and Decision Making (3)
  • ECON 2018 – Essentials of Microeconomics (3)

Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Becoming a CPA in California requires a Bachelor’s degree and 24 semester units of accounting subjects, 24 semester units of business-related subjects, and additional qualifications. We offer a number of accounting and business-related courses that can fulfill the requirements needed to be met prior to becoming a CPA. Each person’s situation is unique, and we highly encourage you to review the California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA) website for additional details. Medical School

In order to be eligible to enter medical school to become a doctor or graduate school to become any number of allied health professionals, you will typically need to complete a number of physical and life science courses, a statistics course, and more. Each medical / graduate school has its own set of required courses and we highly encourage you to review those details and discuss with your program advisor prior to enrolling in any courses at CSUB.
