Admissions Requirements

Admission to the B.A. in Communications program requires the following:

  • 60 completed (not in progress) transferable semester units from an accredited college or university
  • All lower division General Education (GE) certified from incoming Community College.  Full California State University GE Certification is required.
  • Minimum 2.3 GPA in all college coursework

Applicants who have questions regarding their California State University GE Certification should consult with their institution’s transfer advisor prior to applying to CSU Bakersfield.

Financial Aid

The B.A. in Communications program at CSU Bakersfield is eligible for financial aid. The CSUB Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships administers a number of financial aid programs that may include grants, loans, and scholarships. The information on this page is for general use and not intended as financial aid advising. General financial aid tips and information:

Priority date for filing for financial aid is March 2nd. Financial aid applications are typically available October 1st.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Late applications are accepted after the priority date, but awards to late applicants depend upon the availability of remaining funds. Processing of the FAFSA by electronic submission is 7-14 days faster than submitting a paper application.

The schools listed on your FAFSA will receive electronic copies of your student aid report (SAR) and is used for financial aid eligibility calculations. Once your award is determined, you will receive a financial aid award letter via e-mail. Review it carefully, and follow the instructions included with the award letter.

Your fees will be deducted from your financial aid disbursement once your award is verified by CSU Bakersfield Extended Education. Should your financial aid not disburse, you will be financially responsible for all fees.

Maintain your own file of all financial records, and copies of all documents that you send to complete your financial aid file.

Students must be admitted to the university to be eligible for financial aid.

How to Apply

To apply to the Online B.A. in Communications program at CSU Bakersfield, submit the following:

One official hard-copy (unopened) or digital transcript from all colleges attended. Digital transcripts must be sent directly from the college attended to dptranscripts@csub.edu. Any transcript from a college / university outside of the United States will require a course-by-course analysis from a transcript evaluation services such as World Education Services (WES). See WES website for more details.

Using Cal State Apply

Applications for the online B.A. in Communications program are submitted through the CSU Cal State Apply online application system. You can access and navigate the system using the following instructions:

  1. Visit Cal State Apply. If you're a first-time user, you'll need to create an account. If you are a returning user, enter your credentials to get started.
    1. Ensuring that our programs are selectable in Cal State Apply can be tricky, as the system relies on answers to the questions in your "Extended Profile" to properly display available degree programs. Here are the recommended answers (in bold) to the "Extended Profile" questions that will ensure our programs appear: 

      1. What degree, credential, program or certificate are you applying for? First Bachelor's...
      2. Which of the following best describes your current educational status? Have attended or am currently attending a community college...
      3. By the time you enroll at the CSU campus you are applying to, how many college credits will you have earned? 60+ Credits

      Note: These are the recommended profile answers to ensure our programs properly appear and will not be used for admission evaluation. Do not worry if the scenario you select in the "Extended Profile" doesn't exactly match your situation. 

  2. Choose the online B.A. in Communications program by clicking on the "Add Program" tab. Choose the CSU Bakersfield campus, then choose “Communications - (BA)” as your program under the "Bakersfield Extension" heading.
  3. Complete each section of the Cal State Apply application. Sections 1, 2, and 3 contain general information about you and your education background. Section 4 houses questions specific to the online B.A. in Communications program, including the technology survey and any additional documents referenced above.
  4. After you've completed each section, you can then pay your application fee and submit your final application.

Note that you do not need to complete all the sections in one session. The system will save your progress if you need to leave the application and come back to finish it later. If you have any questions about completing your application in Cal State Apply, please call Cal State Apply customer service at (857) 304-2087. Be sure to have your CAS ID number (located under your name in the upper-right corner of the application) when contacting customer service.
