Brian Street, Ph.D.

Dr. Street is an Associate Professor and Founding Graduate Program Director in the Kinesiology department. Dr. Street is also the Director of the Posture and Gait Neuromechanics Laboratory. His research agenda is directed into a two level continuum: 1) identify the neural, musculoskeletal and psychological factors that contribute to balance deficits and falls associated with age and orthopedic injury, and 2) identify optimal exercise, training and intervention strategies to improve age and orthopedic injury related balance deficits and reduce the occurrence and impact of falls.

The Posture and Gait Neuromechanics Laboratory features a comprehensive approach to studying dynamic control of posture and gait by combining various neuro-physiological and biomechanical techniques, including surface electromyography, 3D full-body motion analysis and force measurement, coupled with quantitative and qualitative assessment of perceived function and balance confidence. His research agenda is interdisciplinary, involving surgeons, physical therapist, engineers, computer scientists and physiologists. 

As a result of his initiatives, Dr. Street has published and presented more than 60 journal articles and conference presentations. His research has been published in numerous journals including Gait & Posture, Journal of Clinical Biomechanics, and Human Movement Science. Dr. Street is a member of the International Society for Posture & Gait Research, The Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society, and the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Street has been the dissertation chair/committee member, and supervised over 50 doctoral, master’s and undergraduate students, impacting the next generation of researchers and practitioners in the medical, and biomechanical fields. 

Dr. Street’s teaching is focused in the areas of Biomechanics, Motor Control, Functional Anatomy, and Statistics/Research methods, and has experience teaching from the undergraduate through the doctoral level. Dr. Street is available to supervise undergraduate, graduate and postdoc students.
