Join us this summer on a four day field trip to Santa Cruz Island to learn about geologic mapping and the geologic history of southern California geology – and earn class credit! Led by CSUB and Geologic Maps Foundation Geologist Thomas Davis, Ph. D., highlights of the trip include:

  • Four-day trip to Santa Cruz Island and staying at Reserve Station
  • Two-unit course credit (GEOL 4770 / 5770)
  • Limited to 14 students / attendees

The Details

Attendees MUST be able to do hikes of 3-4 miles for field portion of the course. *Attendees will be responsible for reserving and paying their boat reservation from Ventura Harbor to Prisoner’s Harbor Santa Cruz Island via Island Packer (805-642-1393, http://reserve. and bringing and preparing their meals in the large and well-equipped kitchen at the Reserve Station. Lodging includes shared room at UC Santa Cruz Island Reserve Station, use of facilities, and cost of vehicle transportation on island. See cost table for details. 

Course Description

Students will learn how to read topographic maps and use a geologic compass in the field, make simple geologic maps, while doing various field transects across the island. Emphasis will be on becoming proficient at basic geologic observations, determining field locations, and map making. Class room time will be spent on rock and formation identification, compass and map reading, and learning the fascinating geologic history of southern California. At the end of the course students will be able to teach others how to read a geologic map, make and use simple geologic maps, will become proficient at determining their location in the field and route finding, and have a general understanding of the geology of southern California.
