Principles and practices of writing material particular to science, technology, and specialized professions. Includes expanded definitions, technical descriptions, process explanations, instructional pamphlets, laboratory reports, proposals, writing for the web, communicating with international audiences, and managing effective presentations. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to effectively write various types of technical documents, adapt rhetorical forms to technical communications, and provide constructive feedback regarding written communication in collaborative and leadership settings. ADM 5150 Project Management (3)

The process of integrating and harmonizing systems, techniques, and people to achieve the desired results of a project within established goals of time, budget, and quality. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to identify a project, articulate its goals and objectives, plan all aspects of its execution, execute and control the project, close out the project, and devise appropriate follow-up activities.

ADM 5180 Managerial Economics (3)

Methods and applications of managerial decision-making, covering topics of product and labor demand, production and cost functions, market structure, price and advertising, strategic decision making, decision making under uncertainty, organization architecture, contracts and outsourcing, incentive system, ethics, and leadership. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to (1) develop greater knowledge of the types of problems faced by business managers; (2) develop intuition concerning how economics helps solve managerial problems; (3) learn the strategic workings of modern firms (i.e., small, large, domestic, and multinational); (4) understand how market organization, corporate culture, and public policy affect business performance; and (5) improve presentation skills, including developing an ability to convey information to others. These objectives are achieved by classroom lectures and discussions, data analysis projects, historical and current events, homework assignments and examinations.

ADM 5200 Quantitative Decision Making (3)

Quantitative methods for solving real world problems encountered in various professions. The hands-on, case-study approach is utilized in the diagnosis of problems and search for statistical solutions. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to formulate research questions and experimental designs, collect and analyze data, estimate models, and interpret statistical results to assist with decision support. ADM 5250 Human Resource Management Foundation (3)

This course is an examination of the Human Resource foundation. Students will complete a series of projects that focus on the labor market, the external legal environment, and the manager’s view of the employee life cycle (recruiting and selection, training, supervision, and termination). Upon completion of this course, students should be able to analyze the legal and market forces affecting jobs, perform a job analysis, hire an employee, supervise employees, identify initial training needs and methods, and separate an employee from an organization.

ADM 6900 Capstone (3)

Each course description in the Catalog ends with a delineation of the intended outcomes. Course assignments will be aligned with these intended outcomes. The capstone course will require compilation of the assignments into a portfolio that is presented to showcase skills attained in the program. Each year, a section of the portfolios will be examined by the Program Committee to assess a component of the academic program. The capstone course also will require completion of a culminating project. Students will propose a project that thoroughly applies and further develops a subset of skills acquired in the program (e.g., ADM 5150 Project Management or ADM 5160 Program Evaluation). To the extent possible, students will be encouraged to complete a work-related project. This will add realism and further their professional advancement

EDCI 6100 Research Methods for Educational Leaders (3)

The course is intended to give educators and teachers as leaders (pre-service, in-service, beginning teachers, mentoring teachers) an opportunity to explore their collaborative roles as researchers in various school settings. It also provides them with a base for decision-making processes regarding effective instructional strategies and treatments. Using a self-reflective systematic and scholarly inquiry, the course offers participants an opportunity to formulate meaningful research questions, identify appropriate methods to use in answering a variety of research questions, and design and implement an action plan for change as they reflect on current practice. This class will help participants to play their optimal roles as researchers and instructional leaders in their diverse schools.

EDCI 6400 Curriculum Development and Transformation (3)

This course focuses on the development of curriculum at the K-12 level. Students will explore research and theory of curriculum revision and the principles of curriculum development and design. The development of needs assessments and analysis of results to inform curriculum transformation is covered in depth. Emphasis is on the interdependence of assessment, data and curriculum planning on student achievement.

EDLT 6100 Creating a Culture of Literacy in Diverse Settings (3)

This course will examine the fundamentals of literacy development. It focuses on landmark and current research (both qualitative and quantitative) related to the components of literacy acquisition process. Course content will include the strategic use of literacy levels across various contexts including the role of technology in literacy development. Topics also include the following: orality; phonemics and phonetics; word recognition, fluency, reading comprehension, visualization, vocabulary development; written language development, motivation, and other aspects of the developmental and socio-cultural experience. By the end of the course it is expected that students will be able to articulate a sound vision of a culture of literacy which is conducive to the unique needs of all students and is consistent with the classroom, school, district, and community expectations.

EDLT 6300 Literacy Instruction and Assessment (3)

This course provides candidates with an opportunity to plan, organize, and integrate differentiated literacy instruction for all students. Literacy materials, assessments, and instructional/intervention models are examined and implemented. Candidates apply knowledge by designing and implementing a classroom literacy intervention in a small group format that addresses the unique needs of all students in the diverse classrooms. In addition, this course provides opportunities for candidates to learn methods to assist teachers in using grade level or school-wide assessment data to implement and revise instructional programs and to plan, implement, and evaluate school-wide professional development.

EDLT 6400 Comprehension Strategies, Assessment, and Intervention (3)

This course focuses on the place of comprehension as one of the most significant aspects of promoting a culture of literacy. The course explores current theory and research on the relationship between comprehension and literacy acquisition/proficiency are explored. Instructional/intervention strategies and materials to support comprehension for all students, including English Learners and students with special needs, at the early, intermediate, and fluent levels are studied. Specific topics include background knowledge, culturally responsive pedagogy, response to intervention, concept formation, vocabulary development, narrative and expository text structure analysis, independent reading, and cross-cultural practices.

EDCI 6710 Advanced Topics: Common Core Standardized Testing (3)

Offered as an optional course in the Curriculum and Instruction Master’s program, this in-depth study of the history and purpose of standardized testing in education will serve as the foundation for discussing and evaluating implementation strategies and assessment tools. Print and video gathered from a wide array of sources will be used with the focus being on the immediate application of learning.

CULMINATING ACTIVITY

All C&I students must successfully complete a Culminating Activity with a “B” or better in order to complete the MA degree. The option below is available this Fall:

EDCI 6820: Master’s Examination in Education (3)

The exam consists of three research papers. After registering for the exam, you will receive a list of exam questions on the first day of the term covering different topics discussed while you were in the program. You will be required to select 3 questions from the list and write a research paper on each one (approximately 10-12 pages each) following APA format with 8-10 peer-reviewed sources. The exam (research papers) will be due the last day of classes for the term. The exam runs the full length of the term (16-weeks in the Fall/Spring and 10-weeks in the Summer) and you must be registered by the first week of the term.

Social Work

SW 6300 Foundation Research in Social Work (3)

This course introduces social work research methods, including quantitative and qualitative designs, as they relate to social work practice evaluation. Students develop skills to use research evidence to inform and to evaluate practice. Students learn to analyze and interpret descriptive statistics, as well as how to design and implement ethical research.

SW 6440 Foundation Macro Social Work Practices (3)

This is a macro foundation course in generalist social work practice and focuses on communities and organizations as social systems. It examines generalist community and administrative practice roles, and the perspectives of strengths, empowerment, and evidence-based practice, along with the values of social and economic justice, diversity, and empowerment. Students will analyze the community as a social system and explore evidence-based strategies for bringing about change at the macro level. Specific attention is given to assessing community assets and needs.

SW 6410 Foundation Social Work Practicum (3)

This is the Foundation Practicum course and includes 20 hours a week with a semester total of 320 hours of supervised practice experience in a community social agency (an internship) and a 2-hour integrative seminar. It also includes a face-to-face liaison visit with the student, the seminar instructor, and the field instructor each term. The course focuses on the application of foundation knowledge, skills, values, and ethics to practice with diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities across the life span. Students develop skills in self-evaluation and effective use of self across multiple roles and in accord with professional values and ethics and with applicable laws and regulations; culturally responsive interviewing, assessment, intervention, and evaluation; written and oral professional communication; effective use of supervision; and critical assessment of agency policy and practice.
